LENTEN  EMPHASIS

Our Lenten mission theme is ~ "You can do it!"

1. Ash Wednesday is 2/17.  This is the start of Lent. As our tradition has been, Poughkeepsie Reformed will be uniting with us  on this evening. We will start  with a meal together at ARC, followed by  time of worship.
2. We will begin a  "Rice Bowl" campaign drive on Ash Wednesday.   Rice Bowl is a non - profit Christian organization out of So. Carolina. It was established in 1985.  They work directly with orphanages in countries like India, Haiti and So. Africa.  The concept is simple.  Monies collected provide food of the body and spirit of an orphan in the name of Jesus Christ. We will be distributing  rice bowl shaped banks. Rice is  the dietary staple of much of the world, and it will remind the participant of global hunger.  You will fill these banks with your spare coins.  Here are some suggestions on how to fill the rice bowls.  Give up buying a coffee  on the way to work and make it  at home, chocolate, desserts, second helpings, brown bag a lunch each week, avoid saying negative statements, or another significant sacrifice for you.  Then put the money you save daily into the bank, or put a designated coin you choose each time you say something negative for example. These banks will be returned on Easter, monies counted, and a check forwarded over to the "Rice Bowl " organization.
3. There are suggested Bible readings in this Chimes issue.
4.  We suggest eating a weekly "hungry supper" such as broth, rice, and beans during Lent.  This would be a reflective time on starving people whose main staple is rice.  Pray for world hunger.   Donate money  spent on a typical meal for you & your family in the "rice bowl" bank instead..
5. Maundy Thursday we are invited to join Poughkeepsie Reformed  to witness their re-enactment of the Last Supper.
6. Easter is Sunday  (April 4th).  Please join us for our worship time. We request that you bring a canned item with you to represent the selfless sacrifice that Christ did for us.  (These items will be brought to the local food pantry.)
PLEASE contact Mary Hafford, or check your bulletins for more details. And yes, you can do it!
